Three reasons chatbots don't work in the field
A maintenance worker needs to solve a problem now. Not write prompts, not chat, not read essays.
A maintenance worker is not a copywriter
A bot requires a precise question for a good answer. A maintenance worker can't write a good prompt. They speak in fragments, technical slang, two or three words, crossing context. Developers and analysts study how to write prompts and feed data to AI -- this is not within the capability of a maintenance worker who needs to solve a problem at the machine right now.
No time for ping-pong
While you chat, downtime grows. A bot asks many follow-up questions, whether it knows or not. Three or four rounds and patience is gone. The conversation loops, the answer is still nowhere, and the worker goes back to the binder with manuals. Because at least that one doesn't lead them by the nose.
No need for essays, just quick solutions
A chatbot generates continuous text. A nice paragraph with the answer hidden somewhere in the middle. The maintenance worker has to read it, extract the essentials, filter out the rest, and assemble the procedure themselves. At the machine, with gloves on, under pressure. That's not help. That's extra work. They want to know: step 1, step 2, step 3.
How should a maintenance worker trust the answer?
A chatbot tells you what, but not where it knows it from, until we force it to. Did it read it from the manual? Pull it from the internet? Or simply make it up and it sounds convincing?
No source, no trust
The maintenance worker doesn't know. And when an audit or incident comes, "the chatbot told me" is no defense. You need to know: this procedure is from page 56 of the service manual. A specific document, a specific page, a specific quote.
An unverifiable answer is worthless
An answer you can't verify is worthless in a factory. And we all know how chatty AI can be.
What you can't control with a regular chatbot
Over a free chat you have minimal control. You don't know what anyone entered, what the model processed, what it let through.
Knowledge is lost between sessions
A maintenance worker solves a tricky problem. Cleverly, in their own way. And the chatbot throws it away after the conversation. Three weeks later, a colleague stands in front of the same machine. Same breakdown, solving it from scratch. Knowledge that was once created was never saved.
Who controls their chat
The more open the conversation, the more room for attack. Jailbreak, prompt injection, malicious instructions hidden in a document or question. Nonsensical input the model pointlessly processes and wastes costs. Or they do it completely unknowingly.
No control over wrong turns
You're solving a motor problem. Along the way you mention a fuse. The chatbot latches onto it and from then on guides you to fix the fuse, not the motor. It continues. Next question, next step, the whole procedure built on the wrong branch. It sounds logical, flows smoothly, but it all leads to the wrong diagnosis.
